Everything I have in life, I owe to the people that have worked at Whole Foods Market.
The truth is I was kind of a lousy employee, I never cheered at the pep rallies known as store meetings, I had a reputation for bad customer service, and I was not really passionate about food. Even though I never bought into Whole Foods mission I have gained everything from the people that worked there, from their friendship and support
Someone once told me if you can find someone to marry in life that is a good match for you, that you will win at life. If it weren't for Whole Foods I never would have met my wife, Jennifer E. Mansfield. She was best friends with a coworker of mine, Emily Onstott, who played matchmaker when I was smitten with Jennifer E. Mansfield dimples. I am forever in her debt. Best damn thing to ever happen to me.
Whole Foods gave me two good friends that have nothing to do with Art but I truly value their friendship, Travis Foster and Mike Couste. They put up with my lack of understanding football every Saints season and I know they will always have a good story of the crazy night before. Also, I am grateful to Kerry Keeshan for patiently teaching me how to dice an onion. I still cry like a baby when I do it but I use this skill almost every day.
I also want to give a big shout out to Alice Redmann, who showed me the ropes of doing outdoor arts markets. I did my first shows at the Palmer Park Arts Market sharing a tent with Alice and she showed me how to put the tent together and talk to customers directly. I thought sales came through faraway galleries and I never knew that you could make a living selling art out of a tent. She opened the door to a whole new world and held my hand as I stumbled into my calling.
Finally, this past week three of my co-workers at Whole Foods bought artwork from me, Mari Posa,Victoria Lasserre, and Evangeline Barber And I wanted to say thank you for believing in me and my artwork. It means a lot to me. I quit that job in 2010, and I don't miss working in a kitchen, but the friends I made were truly amazing.
