How I learned to embrace “marketing”

Last summer, I worried that my art career seemed adrift so I tried( begrudgingly) to find a part time job that would provide extra income.  I interviewed at a gallery in the French Quarter but they never called me back.  I’d been a working artist for four years and I earnestly wanted to continue painting full time.  Friends told me that I needed a marketing plan, but I barely knew what marketing was.  I needed help.

With the help of Google I found someone who writes articles about marketing for artists.  His name is Cory Huff and his website is called the Abundant Artist.  Not only were his articles written specifically for artists like me, he actually seemed to know what he was talking about.  I started listening to his Abundant Artist podcast where he talks to different artists about art marketing.   Eventually it felt like maybe I was ready to take his online marketing course.  I must admit that I was a little scared to take the class because:  it cost real money , I’d never taken an online class before, and I just didn’t know if Cory Huff had the answers I was looking for.

I can now say it was some of the best money I’d ever spent. The most important lesson that I learned was how to talk about my artwork in a way that feels authentic.  Before taking the class, talking about my art just made me feel self-conscious and silly.  However, once I started keeping a journal (one of Cory’s suggestions) I found that I could write about my artwork in more genuine ways that other people could relate to.  The class also taught me in-depth ways to tell my story with blogging, email marketing, and social media.  So, I decided that instead of working for someone else part time, I would work for myself part time ---on my own marketing.   I really like my new job. I’m really glad the gallery in the French Quarter never called me back!

Adam, your posts are very engaging! I just got way off my schedule as I continued to read another and another with my lunch. I love reading about how and why you create. I'm inspired! Now, back to my art studio.

And thanks for the little "sidetrack."
I, too, plan to visit New Orleans sometime in the near future.
