LISTENING TO YOUR INNER TORTOISE
Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare? How the slow- moving tortoise won the race because the fast moving hare was overconfident and took a nap? I have a lot in common with the tortoise. When I worked in the Whole Foods kitchen, my friend and co-worker, Mike Couste, described being stuck behind me in a hallway as the worst torture ever. When I hiked the Appalachian Trail I always brought up the rear. I apologize to the many that have been stuck behind me.

I’ve been thinking lately that although my slow pace may be a handicap, it might also be a strength. Somehow, my creative juices flow when I go for a walk . The simple act of putting one foot in front of another at my preferred pace helps me see wonder and possibility in the world and tease out little glimpses of beauty. I can think of only one or two paintings that were inspired by something I saw from a fast-moving car.
If you are trying to find inspiration, my advice is to take it slow. Your friends might not appreciate being stuck behind you, but you can stop to smell the roses---- and paint them if you wish.
Here is a recent painting that inspired my thoughts about listening to your inner tortoise. I loved the Lily of the Nile flowers on this house on Valence street near Magazine Street.
