Pirates, Popes and Presidents- Paintings of the Best New Orleans Restaurants and Bars

Hi Everyone,

I have started a new painting series of New Orleans Restaurants and Bars, focusing on the best of the best---famous places with a rich history and lots of character. I started with Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop and Piano Bar, a fun place on Bourbon Street. Legend has it that the pirate Jean Lafitte owned this building and used it as a blacksmith shop--- and also to sell contraband in defiance of the US embargo act and later to plot piracy on the high seas.

Next I painted the Carousel Bar and Lounge in the Hotel Monteleone on Royal Street in the French Quarter. The Carousel Bar, which was featured in books by Hemingway and Tennessee Williams, has delighted visitors and locals alike since 1949. I stopped in at the Carousel Bar after my wedding (we spent our honeymoon night at the Hotel Monteleone) and realized (it took a while) that it was the bar that was rotating, and not me! It turns out that the bar does one revolution every fifteen minutes.

I also have made prints of this painting available on my website-Click here for Carousel Bar prints

Recently I painted Antoine’s Restaurant, the old- world grand dame of French Creole dining on St. Louis Street in the French Quarter. Since 1840 the Alciatore family has been running Antoine’s. In fact it’s the oldest family-run restaurant in the United States. They invented Oysters Rockefeller and Eggs Sardou and have served several US Presidents and Pope John Paul the Second and were in a bugs bunny cartoon.

Finally I painted Hansen’s Sno-Bliz stand uptown The Hansen Family invented the first ice shaving machine and has had the best sno-balls since 1939. I used to live a block away from there and I included my own cute kids in the painting.

Some of these paintings are still available; all are now available as signed and numbered prints on my website. Please get in touch if you would like to commission a painting of your favorite New Orleans establishment!

New Painting of Hansen's Sno Bliz

If you want the best sno-balls in New Orleans you go to Hansen's Sno -Bliz in New Orleans on the corner of Tchoupitoulas and Bordeaux.  Sno-balls are a specific New Orleans dessert made with finely shaved ice and flavored cane sugar syrup. The founder of Hansen's, Ernest Hanson invented the first ice-shaving machine in 1934 and his wife Mary made the Flavored Syrups.  The shop opened in 1939 and is now run by Ernest and Mary's granddaughter Ashley and they use the same ice shaving machine and secret recipes for the sno-ball syrup.  Their motto is "There are no Shortcuts to Quality and it takes time to make each sno-ball but it's always worth the wait!

We were lucky enough to live a block away from Hansen's when my son was very young.   On a hot day we would often walk over there and get a sno-ball and enjoy it on our front porch.  My son and daughter are in the painting in front of the entrance enjoying the best sno-ball in the city.

New Painting of Antoine's Restaurant

Since 1840 Antoine's Restaurant has been a New Orleans institution serving Louisiana Creole Cuisine in the French Quarter.  It is among the oldest family run restaurants in the United States, known for serving several US presidents and Pope John Paul the Second.  It features 14 dining rooms including the Mystery Room, so named for a Prohibition Era practice because it was entered through a door in the ladies restroom where you could exit with a coffee cup filled with booze breaking the blue laws of the time.  With this painting I wanted the exterior to be beautiful, light filled and elegant as befits this one of a kind New Orleans Restaurant.
